SB 5.4

SB 5.4 Human life is not meant for struggling like animals just for eating, sleeping, and sense enjoyment. Even dogs and hogs do that without so much effort. The real purpose of human life is to rise higher — to purify the heart through tapasya (austerity) and engage in bhakti (devotional service), which gives eternal happiness beyond temporary pleasures. Everything depends on association: if we stay with materialistic people, we go deeper into bondage; if we associate with saintly devotees, we move toward liberation. A sincere spiritual person lives simply, performs duties without attachment, and uses life mainly for hearing, chanting, and remembering Kṛṣṇa. Sense gratification only makes the soul take repeated bodies and suffer again and again. Real intelligence begins when a person questions life’s purpose and seeks spiritual truth.
